  • So Fresh & So Clean
*Switching from Toxic to Natural Products*Hi wonderful humans! I am super excited for this blog post. As some of you know, I’m a huge advocate for living a healthy lifestyle, in moderation of course. However, I recently realized I need to make a few more changes and the products I use are a HUGE part of that. I am nowhere near perfect at this thing called ‘balance’ and I am still learning as I go. I am also not one of those people who shame others for their personal choices. If you want to eat Dominoes’ pizza and drink margaritas every day of the week, you do you! No judgment here.

The reality of it is, I am slowly making small changes to the products I use as I gain more insight. Over the years, I have focused more on the food I eat rather than the products I use in terms of my health. Until recently, I didn’t really even think about what I use on my skin or in my home. Unfortunately, research shows that most of the product’s we use on a daily basis are toxic and harmful to ourselves and others. I feel like so many things are now linked to cancer now and I want to be proactive. That sh*t is scary!

Ultimately, I believe it is important to be aware of the ingredients in your products without obsessing over them. If you don’t know where to start, I encourage you to check out the app “Think Dirty”. It is an unbiased product-comparison app for personal and skincare products. You can type in the name of a product or even scan the barcode, and it will tell you any red flags that come up. You will come to find out that many things advertised as “natural” are actually extremely bad for your body, skin, and hygiene. It can seem discouraging, but like I said, start making SMALL changes incrementally.

Here are a few products I recommend that I have recently started using! Disclaimer: These are simply my opinions and I am still learning as I go.

So, deodorant is one of those things we use on a daily basis. But the pit-falls (pun intended) of regular deodorants and antiperspirants vary in everything from skin irritation to possible health risks. Regardless, every day we are putting this product under our arms and many of the popular drugstore brands are loaded with questionable ingredients. To me, it is just not worth it and I decided to switch to a safer alternative. However, I have tried several natural options in the past and they did NOT WORK for me. I want a safer alternative but I also want to smell good in the process.

One of the bloggers I follow recently posted about a natural deodorant brand that she loves, so I ordered it and have been using it for a month or so. At first, it was a transition and I had to reapply it a few times of day. From what I have read, this is completely normal when switching to a natural deodorant and it can take several weeks for your body to adjust. Now that it has been a month, I can say that I really like this deodorant and I feel great! Occasionally I will still reapply after a long day but I don’t mind. I ordered it from their website, and you can read more about it there.

Derma E- Microdermabrasion Scrub with Dead Sea Salt

I first heard about ‘Derma E’ when I was researching clean skincare products online. This brand popped up several times throughout my search, and it didn’t seem AS pricey as other natural skincare products, so I was interested.

I then found their line of products when I was shopping at Ulta, and I was super excited to try some! I have used several of their skincare products for a year now, and this is one of my absolute favorites. It is an exfoliator made out of sea salt and volcanic sand, and I use it 2-3 times a week. It leaves my face feeling super clean and smooth, and it lasts forever! Its $24 at Ulta or you can buy it on Amazon, and mine lasted for over 6 months. Totally worth it.

Alba Botanica Very Emollient Body Lotion

I am someone who has suffered from dry skin most of my life, especially during the winter season. My hands get so dry and as a teacher, I am constantly washing them which just irritates them more. Kids are germy! In the past, I have used whatever lotion I have on hand and some of them irritate my skin even more. I recently heard about this product from a friend and I ordered it from Amazon. OMG. It is seriously the best AND the ingredients are on point. Plus, you can buy it for under $10, so it’s a steal. If you’re looking for a basic lotion with natural, organic ingredients, this will do the job!

    Zum Clean Aromatherapy Laundry Soap

I’m in love with a laundry soap and I don’t care who knows it. But seriously. My clothes have never smelt so good! I have heard of Zum before, and I’ve seen their products in various places, but I’ve never actually tried any.

Sadly, laundry detergents are filled with toxic ingredients and the government does NOT require the ingredients to be disclosed on the packaging. Many of the known ingredients are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, and brain toxicity. Clean, fresh…and cancerous? Yeah, no thanks.

The reality is that laundry detergent is a staple in almost every home so I figured I would swap my Tide for a healthier alternative. Zum Laundry Soap has no artificial ingredients, uses essential oils, and smells amazing. It can be a little pricey but a little detergent goes a LONG way. I have tried a few non-chemical laundry soaps before and this one is definitely my fav! My sheets and clothes smell so damn good.

Burt’s Bees Sensitive Facial Cleansing Towelettes OR Alba Botanica 3-in-1-Clean Towelettes

I love using make-up wipes when I am on the go or in a hurry. I do not use them every day, but they definitely come in handy when I am feeling a little lazy. In the past, I used Neutrogena facial wipes, but after a little research I realized that the Burt’s Bees or Alba Botanica brands are a better choice overall. These two products have less harsh ingredients and they are great for sensitive skin. I do not recommend relying solely on make-up wipes to do the job, but these are great for when you’re in a rush! You can find both of these brands online or at Target, as well as several grocery stores.

Dr. Bronner’s Citrus Pure-Castile Liquid Soap

After looking over some of the unrecognizable ingredients in my body wash, I recently switched to Dr. Bronners. Dr. Bronner’s liquid soap can be used as a natural alternative to body washes containing artificial fragrance, sodium laureth sulfate, artificial preservatives, and artificial colors. It has a very thin and transparent consistency and a little goes a long way. It also has a multitude of uses, which is nice. For example, you can use it as a body wash, face wash, shampoo, or even for cleaning dishes. This product is sold at several grocery stores as well as on Amazon, which is practically taking over the world at this point. I feel better knowing that I am using something more natural in my routine!

    In Conclusion

Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what products you want to use in your home and on your body. There’s an alarming amount of data proving how the chemicals in personal care and household items are contributing to cancer, allergies and disrupting hormone levels (just to name a few). Scary.

To start, I would pick maybe 2-3 products that you use on a daily basis and replace them with something non-toxic (maybe your face wash and lotion for starters). Then, as your products run out, choose to buy non-toxic ones. That’s what I’m doing and it feels good to make small changes!

Do you have any recommendations or products that you swear by? I would LOVE to hear about them! Thanks for reading.

Isn’t she the best you guys?! I personally have been using Zum brand laundry soap since this summer and I LOVE it! My favorite is the Frankincense and Myrrh, especially during the holiday season! Take time to enjoy your family and friends this week! Love you all! – Kari Jo and Hannah
