Juicing for the New Year! A reset for your mind and body.

Oh brother… here she goes again!

It’s that time of the year! The time where I bust out that dusty ‘ol juicer and put that bad boy to work.

Man, these holidays got me like WHOA. Not entirely sure what the heck happened but I seriously think I ate donuts and McDonald’s like every other day in December. It makes me cringe to think about but it was an eat-on-the-go/comfort food month and that’s ok – but I got a little too comfortable and now I’m really feeling it.

I noticed that I had a pretty bad headache for the last two weeks of December, especially while I am at work. I was trying to figure out why and I’ve found a few reasons:

  1. I’m not drinking enough water.
  2. I’m drinking WAY too much coffee (can’t help it, it’s like RIGHT there!).
  3. I ate fast food  (processed foods) like every freaking day for lunch.

SO! What better time to reset my body then right now!

I do a reset like this at least once a year, usually twice. I’ve done this for about 3 years in a row now and I can really tell when I am ready for another one.  Because I have done this a few times I have mastered my juice recipes and know that I need to have small dinners on these juicing days.

Clean eating can be intimidating if you haven’t done it before, and so can juicing but I promise that both are easy if you just PREPARE. Preparation is key here.

For 3 days I am juicing for breakfast and lunch and for dinner I have prepped a half a chicken breast, a cup of jasmine rice and a bunch of roasted brussel sprouts and beets.

You can roast whatever veggies you like and have whatever organic lean meat your little heart desires. For ideas on what to roast, check out Ashley’s post about roasting vegetables here. (With as much as we talk about it maybe we should rename our blog to On The Tenacious Roasting Pan).

When doing this reset, make sure your foods are organic, otherwise they aren’t clean. Don’t roll your eyes about it either, I’m speaking the truth here! Your body will notice it and it will appreciate and thank you.

Here are my recipes for my favorite juices:

Day 1:

  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 1 handful of parsley
  • 5 stalks of kale (or 1/4 bag of kale)
  • 4 granny smith apples
  • 2 pink lady apples
  • 1 inch of ginger root
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1/2 pineapple

Day 2

  • 1 bunch of celery
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 1 handful of parsley

  • 2 lemons
  • 2 beets

Day 3

Choose fruits and veggies that are on sale, y’all. I found pineapples for $1 at Aldi (and avocados were $.39!!!!!). I was able to buy everything I needed for the whole week, including the chicken and rice for $36. Woo Hoo!

I know I have talked about it before so I won’t waste your time but I have a Healthy Juicer. It’s so simple and it takes like 4 seconds to clean. LOVE. I don’t have time for anything else.

This is my juice from Day 1. It filled this bad boy up plus about another half, about 64 ounces.

You know it’s good when your 3 year old drinks it ALL! I’m totally in love with his face. He loves it!

I did this reset on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of last week. Not only did I feel amazing but it also motivated me to get back to the gym. After giving myself every excuse not to go I started back on Thursday. I feel amazing and I’m super glad I did. It just gave me that extra bit of oomph that I needed to get my goals in line with my values. I’m the kind of person that NEEDS to workout. I get sad and cranky and mondo depressed when I don’t and NOBODY wants that Kari Jo around, I promise ya. Just ask my coworkers, those poor souls.

It’s a new year, with new goals, and a new and improved values and plans. This will be an amazing year of growth and self-love, oh and travel!

Remember to also give yourself some grace, if someone offers you a freaking delish looking cookie, eat it. I do. every time. And you know what, I never regret it. Feed your body 90% of what it needs and let your soul have the other 10%. After all, life is supposed to be lived in the NOW, not in the past, and not in the future. So eat the cookie and eat the kale and love yourself.

Love love love,

Kari Jo
